GQ Praises Max’s Book & Gallery Show

Their words: “The legacy of Max’s Kansas City—the fabled ’60s and ’70s N.Y.C. haunt where Warhol held court in the back room and the Velvet Underground was the house band—is being revved up to mythic, CBGB-like proportion. There’s a new photo book out, a companion gallery show devoted to portraits of the place’s most famous devotees, and (of course) a movie in the works.

And we’re happy to report that the shots themselves—snapped by Max’s insiders like Bob Gruen, Billy Name, and Anton Perich, and featuring folks like Jagger, Bowie, and The Boss in their younger, scrappier days—fully support the idea that Max’s really, truly was a subterranean den of over-the-top hedonism.
