Max’s Icon: Andy Warhol

Max’s Icon: Andy Warhol

Bob Colacello, one of Warhol’s right-hand men and former editor of Interview remembers Warhol’s famous polaroids with Mick Jagger, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jack Nicholson, Audrey Hepburn and more.

“When I met Andy in 1970, he was carrying the Polaroid Big Shot in his Brownie’s health-food store plastic bag, along with his little Sony tape recorder and extra tapes and extra Polaroid film,”

He continues; “While Warhol was best known for his multi-panel screenprint portraits, “the Polaroids he tended to take more when you were in a small group,” Colacello says, “or they were the first stab at someone having their portrait done.”

Taschen releases Andy Warhol: Polaroids 1958-1987, a Factory-doorstop-thick collection of the artist’s instant portraits next month.
